Breastfeeding in the Early Weeks: Gentle Guidance for New Mothers

Almost every new mother is surprised by one thing: breastfeeding is a learned skill — for you and for your baby. If the first days feel clumsy, you are not failing. You are learning.
Focus on the latch, not the clock
A deep, comfortable latch matters more than any schedule. Your baby's mouth should cover more of the areola below the nipple than above, with lips flanged outward. If feeding hurts beyond the first few seconds, gently break the suction with a clean finger and try again.
Feed on cues, not on schedule
Rooting, stirring, and hands-to-mouth movements are early hunger cues — crying is a late one. Responding early makes latching easier for both of you and builds your milk supply naturally in these foundational weeks.
Care for yourself too
Keep water and a snack within reach of your nursing spot. Rest when you can, accept help when it's offered, and remember that your wellbeing is part of your baby's feeding journey — not separate from it.
And if you're struggling, please reach out early. A single session with a lactation specialist can transform the whole experience. That is exactly what we're here for.
